The Association was originally formed 80 years ago, and its membership embraces a wide spectrum of industry, local authority and commerce drawn in the main from the counties of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. In 2000 the Beds and Herts Occupational Health and Safety Association amalgamated with the Bedfordshire and Luton Fire Safety Panel to form the Lea and Ouse Valleys Safety Association, widening the membership and extending the interest of the group. The association is a member of Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, Safety Groups UK the British Safety Council, and has links with the HSE and the Beds and Luton Fire and Rescue Service.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the association are to promote and encourage a higher standard and understanding of Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare, Environmental management and security; at work, in the home and in the community.
SAFETY GROUPS UK
The association is one of a network of local RoSPA Safety Groups representing small and medium enterprises throughout the country. Details of the network of safety groups and why your company should be a member of your local group can be found on the Safety Groups UK website at: http://www.safetygroupsuk.org.uk/
AWARDS
Safety Groups UK run an annual competition for excellence between groups in memory of Alan Butler and sponsored by BT. The Lea and Ouse Valleys Safety Association were fortunate to win the category for Best Communication with this website in 2007. We were again fortunate in 2008 to receive Highly Commended in the Best Communication category featuring our Newsletter, LOVSACHAT. The categories for awards changed in 2011, and LOVSA were fortunate to receive a Silver Award for its work in 2011.
MEETINGS
Meetings are held throughout the year with specialist speakers of high repute. The membership has a very diverse and profound knowledge and experience in Health and Safety matters. Adequate time is provided giving an opportunity for members to discuss problems and tap into the expertise of others at the meetings away from the normal working environment and work pressures.

GEORGE SLAUGHTER SAFETY AWARD
For some twenty five years the Association arranged a competition for young people from member companies to further the Health and Safety message to the under 21's at work. Owing to changes in the way training of young entrants has changed in recent years the competition has had to be suspended in its present form. Details of the competition and photographs of recent winners can be found here.
THE SMALL COMPANY
The smaller company has everything to gain by membership especially when the costs of employing a specialist Health and Safety Consultant is difficult to justify. Every member has a voice, an equal opportunity to participate in discussions and bring problems to the meetings to make use of the expertise available.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership is available to any person, company, or organisation in the surrounding region. The membership fee is £45 for a Company and £40 for an individual, renewable on an annual basis.
