This award was established in memory and honour of the late Mr George Slaughter (pictured right) who had along and established affiliation with our Association. He had been a Vice-President for some 20 years and his main interest was the promotion of health and safety training. He also assisted with the running of first aid competitions when the Association was able to put up some 70 four person teams entering the competitions with eight divisions plus a final event for winner of winners.
As a registered charity, and with the decline in industry of Safety Practitioners, the Association was unable to continue to carry the burden and expense of these competitions. Consequently it was decided to continue the charitable works in another form more fitting with the current trends in accident prevention rather than treating the injury.
It is generally felt that the need to research the answers by young people, does have a lasting effect upon them and is in keeping with the spirit and intentions of the late George Slaughter who died some three years before the commencement of these competitions.
The first George Slaughter Award Competition took place in 1980 and it has followed in a similar format since with steady and confident results.
Unfortunately, with the decline of industry and their Safety Practitioners in our region over the last 10 to 15 years and the reduction of apprenticeships, the numbers entering the competition have also dwindled. Consequently the final competition in this format took place in 2004, its 25th year.
Never-the-less we were grateful to Britannia Airways, Monarch Airlines, Easyjet and Luton Borough Council who provided candidates and entered the competition in recent years.
Britannia Airways have been the most supportive of this competition. It has been the view of the Technical Director and the Managers who are involved with the Apprenticeship training that they should enter the competition as a necessary useful and practical training activity.
The Association is grateful to the Health and Safety Executive who judged the papers and provided a shield as a trophy; they also take time out to return to the respective Companies to discuss the questions with those who entered this important competition.
